  1. 1769-1832. French comparative anatomist. In
  2. 1799 he showed that some species have become
  3. extinct by reconstructing extinct giant
  4. animals that he believed were destroyed in a
  5. series of giant deluges. These ideas are
  6. expressed in Recherches sur les ossaments
  7. fossiles de quadrupedes 1812 and Discours sur
  8. les revolutions de la surface du globe 1825.
  9. In 1798 Cuvier produced Tableau elementaire
  10. de l'histoire naturelle des animaux, in which
  11. his scheme of classification is outlined. He
  12. was professor of natural history in the
  13. College de France from 1799 and at the Jardin
  14. des Plantes from 1802; at the Restoration in
  15. 1815 he was elected chancellor of the
  16. University of Paris. Cuvier was the first to
  17. relate the structure of fossil animals to
  18. that of their living relatives. His great
  19. work Le Regne animal/ The Animal Kingdom 1817
  20. is a systematic survey.
